What we've got here is a clean-looking used '94 Porsche 968 6spd manual with 50k miles for sale at a Ford dealer for $17k. I've got a '14 Focus ST with Ford Racing Exhaust and yellow calipers with only 3500 miles. How much of a hit would I take in the monies if I hypothetically wanted to trade my ST in for it? I need math people and Maybe Automatch to help me out with this clearly sick and twisted idea of mine.

EDIT: I forgot to mention. The 968 is in Ohio(Noah stay away form this car!) and I'm in Michigan.

Well you're going to take the full depreciation hit on the ST. You won't get any money back for the Exhaust or Calipers, you'll pay out the ass in maintenance on the Porsche...

Sounds like a bad idea all around to me.

That, I'm not sure of.

How much do you owe on the Focus? It certainly still has more value than what they're asking for on the 968, which is gorgeous, btw.

Ask what they would give you for it in trade. Doesn't hurt to ask questions.

Any cash saved should be socked away for the inevitable repairs...

In the long run though, that ST is going to out-depreciate the Porsche in what ever the current loan term is.

Keep the new car. If you're asking, you can't afford (and therefore do not want) a 20 year old Porsche.

20 year old Porsches are for people who have extra garage space and piles of unnecessary cash clogging up the space under the mattress.

Sure there are plenty of others out there, but they're all going to be more expensive to buy and maintain. E30s, E36s, Mustangs, 924s, 944s, 240sx, MR2. There are plenty but can you afford them and the ST? Buying cars impulsively should only be done if you can afford to buy them cash without sacrificing your lifestyle.

If I remember correctly you're not even old enough to drink, I doubt you can afford to DD a 968, the purchase price will only be the start. I used to be a RWD fanatic too, then I realized the only place where RWD was really an advantage was the racetrack. Now I'm a member of a racetrack, so I have a RWD toy for there but for a DD FWD is fine, especially a car like the ST (which is also fun at the racetrack).

What you need to understand about buy a car, especially a new one, is that the second you drive it off the lot you've lost thousands of dollars worth of value. It is no longer a 'new' car, it is now a used car. Why are you so fixated on getting a RWD car? What do you need RWD for?

What does a Mustang or a Porsche provide you with that the ST doesn't?

So you probably aren't upside-down. You are going to lose a great deal of the cah you put down. A rough estimate would be that you are going to lose about $4000 for two months of owning an ST. To me, that's not a good trade. You should never trade in a car you just bought new.

2. More fun than FWD

3. RWD cars generally look better than FWD cars

4. Driving a RWD car felt more challenging and engaging than a FWD

5. Much better ride and feel

6. A Mustang and Porsche provide me with my dream muscle car and dream German sports car. The ST is neither.

I agree on the ST, but you want a sports car (rwd), and I'm saying the mainstream choices (350/370Z, Mustang, BRZ) are what they are for a reason.

Obscure crap is everything Jalopniks drool over: old Porsches, Saabs, Volvos, French shit...old, weird, quirky crap with less performance and more heartache, which is fine if you have lots of time and money, but not if you're a broke college kid.

I bought a 300ZX in college (06ish?) Not as bad a choice as what I see here daily, but still not the best idea.

Okay, but if you're not going to the track most of those things are moot unless you're breaking the law on a regular basis. I would say if you are driving on the street in such a way where RWD is more 'fun' than FWD then you're not mature enough for the RWD car in the first place. Again a RWD is only more 'challenging and engaging' if you are on a racetrack or are driving recklessly.

I remember you wrote an article recently about driving your dad's 911, is this the reason behind your sudden obsession with RWD? Because if it is you're going to be disappointed in whatever you choose because it's not going to be a 911.

Also don't take this the wrong way but did your parents help you with buying the ST? Do you still live at home? If so then you should be having this discussion with them, because I doubt they'll be happy with you trading in your brand new safe car for a 20 year old unreliable Porsche.

I may come off as a bit of a dick here, but dude please stop bitching about your ST. You're only 18 and you got a damn fine/fast/fun car for somebody your age.

DD your ST and have some fun in it. You've only had it for 2 months so I find it hard to believe that you're bored with it already.

You have a 911 in the garage already that your dad lets you take out on occasion. If you feel the itch to get rid of your ST, just go drive the 911 around to satisfy the urge.

One thing you can start doing, literally today, is saving your money. Get a job and save every fucking penny. When you get out of college and out from under your parent's roof, you should have a decent amount of cash saved to buy your dream RWD coupe.

You're an idiot but you're my kind of idiot. I mean this in a good way if you'll allow me to explain. My first car was a Datsun 280ZX. Slow, stylish and wierd it was my high school ride.

Somehow, I got it in my head that I wanted a third-gen Firebird. I read all the reviews, memorized the Wikipedia article and watched hours of related YouTube videos.

Long story short, I sold the Datsun, bought the first third-gen Formula I found and it was the WORST CAR I EVER OWNED. It was unreliable, slow and drank gas. I lucked out with my first car and took reliability for granted. I would've killed to have a reliable car again.

It's cool to have a cool car but sometimes you just want to drive to work and not have to stress about mechanical stuff. Buying a new car is always a poor choice financially but since you have it, might as well keep it. Someone else was saying you should buy a Miata or similar as a second "fun" car and they're dead on.

I have a '99 Suburban and it's transportation. Having that reliable car allows me to keep a small fleet of odd beaters.

Bottom line: Keep your new car, buy an old one but NOT this one. Seriously, this car cost over $100,000 when new and it hasn't gotten more reliable or cheaper to maintain with age.

As somebody who has been around front-engined Porsches for a while, this would be a horrible decision from a financial standpoint, but awesome in every other way.

Even more fiscally ludicrous if you wouldn't be doing the work yourself. New parts are stupid expensive, machine work is super expensive (Nikasil-coated cylinders), and everything takes a lot of time to do right, so labor is none too cheap either. A full rebuild on a 2.5L SOHC costs me about $2500-$3000 each time (yes, I've done more than one, but it's a race car). If you pass this car up, whatever you do, don't buy a 928. The costs are about double on that V8.

When it is running, it's an awesome car. Perfectly balanced with a nice amount of power from the 3L motor. My car ran great for a while but the constant abuse caught up to me and I've been paying through the nose for the last few years.

It's going to cost more to run and maybe more to insure.

Do you owe more than your trade is worth? That's where you take the biggest bit, but cars aren't investments so it's not a huge deal. It just means you'll be further underwater and probably have either higher payments, a longer term or both. Get Gap coverage.

All that aside, if it's what you want to do, do it, just know what you are doing. I did it for the Sonic, and I love the car. Financially it wasn't a great decision, but it doesn't REALLY matter: my payments are basically the same, my interest rate is basically the same, and my insurance is cheaper. Long term it's costing me more money, but I'm generally glad I did it.

Tl;DR: I did that kind of thing, it was a terrible financial decision but I don't care.

Of course I'm thinking about doing another car swap sometime next year again...so I'm probably not the best person to take advice from...

If you want RWD so badly, hang out with the Formula/Baja SAE kids and you can probably get some seat time.

When you're 10 minutes late for class and it's pouring rain, the last thing you want is silence when you turn the key. Yes, you could daily the Porsche but miles will eat into the value, parts will bankrupt you, and that's not even accounting for any initial costs getting it up to spec.

My 1995 Integra GS-R is mad fun, but there are times when I wish I had more sound deadening or a stereo that doesn't require a 20" antenna. It isn't gentle with the high-test, the brake master cylinder is going out, and the rubber trim is disintegrating due to age and sun. And this was a two-owner enthusiast owned car.

My advice? Keep the Focus and buy a second car.

Ok, the 911 is in no way a fast car compared to modern cars, I'm not doing anything stupid like racing at streetlights or around corners either, it honestly felt more fun than a FWD car for some reason that I can't put into words. And you're right, maybe driving that 911 around is the catalyst for my recent urge to have a RWD car now, but I can't help it.

On the other topic, yes they did help through co-signing I believe. We sold my last car for $8500 and I'm currently making the monthly payments on the car. Seeing is it appears that I'm getting all this hate from everyone, I guess I'll just leave the topic alone then, sorry for wasting everyone's time.

You don't need to feel sorry, you're still young and we're trying to help you (not that I am *that* much older). But you need to also understand the difference in driving feel between an old car and a new car, they are completely different. Older cars can feel more fun because they are simpler, more direct and more visceral. You are more involved in driving them because you have to be. At the same time there is a reason why cars aren't like this anymore, as much fun as they can be in short bursts they don't normally make great daily drivers. They're unreliable, unsafe, expensive and less comfortable.

Look, buyer's remorse is normal, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence but you need to drive more cars before you make the decision that you HAVE to have a RWD car. RWD isn't some magical thing that makes everything better even if we as car enthusiasts like to pretend it is; for normal everyday driving there is really no difference.

I want to actually be genuinely involved in my driving. I used the 911 as a daily a week or so ago and didn't get one bit tired of it, maybe stressed in parking lots but never tired of it.

I'm not even sure what the "grass is greener" quote even means, yet it's been used multiple times over the past few weeks. I guess the only way to find out if I need to have a RWD car is tomorrow when I get my oil changed. I'm going to ask to test drive a Mustang at the dealer and see if I really did miss out on anything, V6 or V8.

I wouldn't do that. I know it's a clean car, but for that price I bet ya I could find a solid 930 or an E30 M3. I know they're kinda rare, but I can only imagine the resale value going down on it.

Selling your under warranty focus ST for a 20 year old porsche is a fucking awful idea. To buy this for a second car? sure. A daily driver? Oh good lord no.

Well I hate to say this, but you're a bit too late to the party. Dreams have already been crushed again and I'm stuck with the Focus(which I know doesn't sound bad, it's actually quite good). I'll be waiting for what I can only imagine is a decade before I can actually have one of my dream cars. I envy you for having something I wish I could drive.

What is means is that you're never satisfied with what you have, it's normal. You get something new and you love it for a little bit but then you see something else AND THAT IS GOING TO BE SO MUCH BETTER OMG. Then you go get that and you have the same reaction with something else.

DDing a car you've hero-worshiped for years for 1 weeks is not indicative of what it is like to drive one every. single. day. You'll feel differently when you're late for work and your 40 year old car decides it doesn't want to start because it's too cold out.

I hope you are not considering this as a daily driver..........No vintage Porsche is going to be cheap to maintain.

There is an old song that says, "If you can't be with the one you love... Love the one you're with."

In other words, enjoy your car! You just got a brand new Focus ST. Enjoy driving it. Maybe after a year or so the loss of money won't seem so great and you can get something rwd. If it were me, though, I would save up some money and buy a cheap rwd car to be a toy. You typically don't want to have your toy/fun car be the one that needs to get you to work on monday. If something goes wrong, you could be screwed. Another plus is that if you buy something cheap, you can do whatever you want to it without having to worry about warranty issues. You have a cheap fun car and make the payments on your (hopefully) reliable DD that is only slightly less fun. Best of both worlds.

I may be coming to NY in August, but it'll be upstate NY to visit my Uncle(the one with the 911, 944, and now an Audi TT). I've never driven anyone else's car(s) before other than my own and family cars. I'd honestly be afraid to drive someone else's, yours included.

I'll sell you my 1986 32 valve v8 928 if you want to go down a rabbit hole of maintenance hell and continue where I left off. 1.5 years, $12,000 in parts, with me doing all the work. It runs awesome *right meow* though. What will happen if you daily drive it, let's find out. I love the idea of the car though, so I continue to take the abuse. Once you have a DD plus a fun car, stupid ideas like this at least won't turn you into a pedestrian on your way to work.

Hell no do I want a V8 German Money Pit. I may love Porsche to the grave, and may have considered the stupid idea(but soo much want) of a 968 as a DD, but I am for sure as hell not that stupid enough to ever consider owning a 928 EVER(no offense though as I'm sure when it's running it's a very fun car)! That's like asking me if I wanted a used BMW 850 with only 30k miles and for sale from $7500, does it sound awesome and a badass idea to DD a German V12 Coupe for the money? Yeah! But it's being sold for such a low price for a reason and only an idiot would actually buy it!

I'm not as stupid as some may think I am.

I got a 29 year old BMW that sat in the woods for 6 years that would make a great DD.

I find it hard to believe it'll be hard to get insurance. I know a guy that is 17 and daily drives his restored CJ-7 all year long and it's on Antique plates here in Virginia. Older, less safe car and he said he's still paying tons less then he would if he was driving a new Camry.

90s mustangs can be had for pretty cheap. Even early 2000s. Find a worn one and fix it up with performance bits.

Or get a 2000s Trans Am. Maybe a gto.

Buy a clean C4 then. Cheap to run, cheap to maintain, will compete with your Focus ST in performance and probably pass it in handling, and has the best seats this side of the C7.

Also, flip-up headlights. The end.

A couple of months ago I went for a test drive in a Fiesta St, just to see what the hype was about concerning the Focus and Fiesta ST's. I was impressed, but the engine had too much turbo feel to it, both in noise and power delivery. The VW GTI is a better all-around package, IMHO, but Ford did a great job. The Fiesta felt a little too extreme for me. That probably makes it (and the Focus ST) just about right for their target markets.
